2024 autumn
Just a little off the main Kyoto grid, experience the autumn leaves that enthralled the people of the Heian period.
Uji was developed well before the capital was established in the Kyoto basin. Blessed with beautiful scenery centering on the Uji River, it was also a place where many Heian era aristocrats had vacation homes. Byodoin was as well was originally Uji-dono, the villa of Fujiwara no Michinaga, a statesman in Heian times. However, it wasn’t long before signs of unrest appeared in society, with natural disasters, civil war, the burning of temples and shrines, and epidemics. Finally, in the year 1052, 25 years after Michinaga’s death, in the first year of the “Latter Days of the Law” when it was believed that the Buddha's teachings would no longer be properly transmitted, his eldest son Yorimichi decided to renovate the temple and changed its name to Byodoin. With his nearly 3-meter-high seated statue of Amitabha Tathagata and the surrounding “Worshipping Bodhisattvas on Clouds” statues, it may have been his wish to ease the anxieties of human hearts by embodying the state of paradise in this world. Photo shows Byodoin Hou-ou-do (Phoenix Hall). The Worshipping Bodhisattvas on Clouds statues are at the Byodoin Museum Hoshokan. Byodoin Temple/116 Uji-renge, Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture/ Get off at Uji Station on the JR Nara Line from Kyoto Station.

tomorrow would still look the same as before.
Is this because the city has seen such sadness, suffering, and upheaval that it understands the importance of bringing richness to ordinary, everyday life?
The old city can be a bit intimidating. But it can also be so sweet. That’s what’s so intriguing.
